DreadBall: Corporation Team Tactics

Being a Mantic Pathfinder and a Mantic DreadBall Fanatic, I often get asked about how to play with several DreadBall teams. What tactics they should play, which are their strongest points or just their flaws. What MVP's should we really go with, and how will the team grow in a league? Trying to educate people in a group, I thought I'd write my opinion down for all the teams. So let's start with the first team, The Corporation!

A Corporation team running on the pitch!

The Corporation

The Corporation is a pure human team. Because of this, they do have a default statline. with not that many fancy upgrades. Let's take a look..
For their 100mc, you get one coaching die, two DreadBall Cards and the following statline

Mov Str Spd Skl Arm SLu Cst Notes
Guard 5 4+ 4+ 4+ 4+ x2 10mc none
Jack 5 4+ 4+ 4+ 4+ x3 8mc none
Striker 5 4+ 4+ 4+ 5+ x3 10mc none

That shouldn't be too hard to remember now should it? With only 4+'es to be rolled, you can quickly start playing and still have a decent success at everything. A movement of 5 isn't that bad, certainly because all roles have it. The lack of special rules makes this explanation short.

How to play with them

The Corporation is one of the two starter teams that about everybody owns. Being part of the starting box, this team excels at guiding you through your first game of DreadBall and gaining a feel on how the game is played. Yet these humans are not to be underestimated! Thanks to their very decent starting grid, you have an entire team at your disposal that is great to start with. Your goal should be to score soon and keep blocking the others using your Jacks to support the Guards in taking down the opposing team. Don't be afraid to spend an extra action in moving a Jack closer in order to give your Guard the extra help.
Corporation startup positions
If we look into positioning, if you're the starting player, position a Striker on both sides of the pitch. Setup your team in a line, and use your Jacks to protect the 4pointer. Throw all your Strikers in the game and try to score high and soon. If you go second, keep one of your Strikers in Reserve and use the rest to block the first incoming wave. Be sure to defend your Strikers.
If you look at the stats, you'll notice that the 4+ is everywhere. When looking at a die, that's a 50% chance of success! When using a Striker to pick up the ball, that's almost a guaranteed success of a double. This, combined with their 5 movement allows you to score very quickly, so make good use of it.

League play

A league is no laughing matter. Being a starting team, it's certainly not easy to go into this challenge unprepared. If you don't protect your Strikers you might lose them very quickly to other, more stronger Guards who will do their best to knock you down. Be quick to invest into your dream team, and don't forget to buy more Coaching dice. And in case something should happen to your team members, the cost of buying new ones is at least bearable, in comparison to other teams. Because their default statline, gaining extra stats on leveling will gain your preference.

Who needs MVP's?

Well.. when playing with the Corporation MVP's can really be your best friends. Depending on your favourite playstyle you'll quickly find the MVP to help you achieve this.
Personally I'm a big fan of using Number88. A Jack that's actually a better Striker than most. I've seen a lot of other MVP's being used. From the Enforcer, that'll make your Guards a formidable frontline, to the Praetorian that'll score for you when your Strikers fail. But as always, still remember that these MVP's block your players from gaining experience.

Overall

To me, this is a great team. A decent statline, and models to suit any playstyle needed to defeat any team in front of you. Not much thinking is needed and thanks to this team being so easy, you'll mostly get opponents underestimating the power of these men. Leagues can be very tough for a Corporation Team in the beginning, but once they start leveling, they do get good. Having no real negative points, this means the only way is up!
